Italian Purple Garlic Growers of Dungog

Australia - Vegetables and vegetable preserves

The Four Acre Farm is a small market garden near the town of Dungog, New South Wales. Dungog is a small town of 2,000 people, and is roughly 75km from the regional center of Newcastle. The main crop is organically grown garlic, a hardneck variety that we call ‘Italian Purple’, whilst trialing several other cultivars. Alongside the garlic crop, the community grows a range of other vegetables, fruit and also cut flowers. The produce is grown and sold at a local grower’s stall with other growers from the area and a local cafe. The community also sells the garlic crop at a large farmer’s market in Newcastle, thus selling directly to the consumer, including several chefs.
