Slow Food Devon Farmers’ Market

In 2006, the Slow Food Devon convivium – one of the largest and most active in the South West – launched a Slow Food Market in Exeter, moving to a new site in Topsham earlier in 2008. It has established a reputation for promoting good, clean and fair food and bringing people together in the community.
The market is organised and run entirely on a non-profit basis. There are stalls for up to 20 quality producers of artisan food and drink, attracting huge interest from a range of quality producers and suppliers. Exhibitors must be members of Slow Food Devon to demonstrate their commitment to Slow Food’s ideals, values and ethos, to be admitted as an exhibitor. An underlying purpose of the Slow Food Market is to inform, educate and learn as well as to provide an opportunity for suppliers and producers to sell. Taste Workshops are also held on a regular basis. There is always plenty of food to buy and eat, everything from wine, local fruits and preserves, to bread and cheese. The market aims to become a place where Topsham residents and visitors alike will gather and socialise in true Slow Food style. Wines, ciders and beers are available for sale and there are tables and chairs set up for people to relax and chat, eat and drink.
Strong links with the local primary school have also been forged, with pupils organising a stand and local chefs visiting the school to teach the pupils how to make food to sell. Vegetable gardens have been established and, in time, produce will also be sold at the market.
The convivium leader of Slow Food Devon and other key organisers of the market represent the community.
