OPENING CEREMONY

The Terra Madre 2008 opening ceremony was a concert, conference and celebration all at the same time, and also much more. Different costumes, cultures and ethnicities all came together for the third edition of an event unique in the world, giving people a chance to meet, learn and also enjoy themselves. 153 faces, one for every participating country, made up a perfect mosaic on the stage as Carlo Petrini opened the proceedings.
“Communicate the farming spirit, open yourself to the community.” With this exhortation the Slow Food president received a warm welcome from the gathered crowds, as did vice-president Vandana Shiva.
Held in the PalaIsozaki in Turin, the Olympic stadium was brightened by the colorful flags from around the world.
“We will be the generation that will reconcile people and the land,” said Sam Levin, a student from Massachusetts, to loud applause from the international delegates. Looking ahead, shaping the future: welcome to Terra Madre.
