Fish: It's a slippery issue

GMOs

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have quite a long story now. It was 1996 when the first GMO was placed on the market, which gives us an appropriate period of time to start drawing up a balance of their cultivation.
GMOs represent quite a complicated issue, since the questions they raise span over different fields.

A lot of attention has often been posed on the implications of GMOs consumption on human and animal health. Are they safe? Might they have any unforeseen negative effect? In addition to this, also the consequences that GMOs cultivation has on the environment can't be left behind. When we talk about GMOs, we can't avoid to consider the role they played in the destruction of biodiversity through substitution of local varieties, in the annulment of food sovereignty, and in the threat of contamination to non-GM cultures.

And besides all these issue, are they really necessary? Are they really able to some advantages?

Since the very beginning Slow Food has refused GMOs and many activities and campaigns have been launched to sustain this position.

This forum is intended to allow anybody who wishes so to contribute with information, ideas or stories that can help us collectively tackle the issue and promote sustainable practices.

Indeed Georie is raising a good point: governments have a crucial role in allowing GMO sperimentation, commercialization and cultivation. Seed and chemical companies developing and marketing GMOs often take advantage of weak governments in order to introduce them into a country. Then, once a GMO is in, it is quite hard to take it out.

Advocacy and public involvement are fundamental to protect local agriculture and traditions. Civil society organizations, farmer associations and policymakers should work closely to counteract private economic interests leading to GMOs intrusion.

It would be very interesting to hear stories of fruitful collaborations; in case anyone has a story to tell, feel free to share it with us.

GMOs are tools that big hungry corporations use to control our agriculture and food, our health and lifestyle. We will lose our culture and identify if we lose our local seeds, our local food. In the Philippines, transnational corporations are working with government agencies to influence policies to allow field trials and commercialization of GM corn, eggplant, cotton, and now our staple food, rice. When government allowed commercial release of GM corn in 2002, now farmers and civil society organizations advocates of sustainable agriculture are more vigilant and strongly oppose field testing and commercialization of other GMO crops - eggplant, cotton and rice.

When talking about GMOs you always need to look at the scenary from a prospective which is as global as possible. GMOs cultivation and commercialization are ruled by economical interests influencing world market offers as well as relevant political decisions. A ban on GMO cultivation in Europe would be an important signal but it could be tricky somehow. As long as a large part of the market is based and depend on GM products, cultivation could also be stopped in Europe but would rather be increased in those other countries where institutions are less prepared to counteract strong economic interests. The european ban would become a relevant signal in case it would mark the beginning of a watching activity by developed countries over developing ones, trying to avoid exploitations and speculations. How dealing with that? What asking for?
